In August 2016, and as an official event of San Sebastian European Cultural Capital, the Bidasoa Basque Pyrenees Freedom Trails’ Association successfully organised a day trail and a night trek to commemorate one of the WWII escape lines that spirited fugitives, mainly downed Allied aircrew, from Nazi-occupied Europe and across the Pyrenees (the “Comete” escape line).
For 22-24 June 2018 BFTA has organised another two-day commemorative walk, this time along the “Zero” escape line, further east along the Basque Pyerenees. On Saturday 23 the Schepens-Sarotxar Freedom Trail will go from Mendive (Saint Sauveur) in the French Basque Country to Iratiko Etxeak and, on the Sunday from this point to Orbaizeta town in Navarre, with a number of tributes on the way. Friday and Sunday hotel in the city of San Sebastian and Saturday night in Pamplona city.
