No Surrender at Arnhem by Robert Peatling

Parachuted into Arnhem with 2 Para in September 1944, Robert Peatling became separated during the confused street fighting. Ordered to surrender, he slipped away and hid in a bombed-out attic, scavenging at night for food and ammunition. Civilians of the Dutch Resistance risked everything to shelter him, providing clothing and safe houses.

Peatling kept a diary for three and a half months, recounting raids, narrow escapes, and the courage of families who faced execution if discovered. The manuscript survived thanks to farmer Herman van Esvald, and MI9 later returned it after interrogation. Peatling, missing in action for over six months, finally reached the Canadians in April 1945. His wife, who refused to draw a widow’s pension, welcomed him home. The diary is a vivid account of evasion and the Dutch people’s generosity.
