The Cover Up at Omaha Beach by Gary Sterne (Review by Chris Colussi)
Many of us have read about the desperate struggle at Omaha Beach and the Pointe du Hoc. This book shows that much of what we thought we knew is, in fact, wrong.
Drawing on interviews with Rangers who fought at Omaha and the release of classified papers more than sixty years after the landings, Sterne reveals what really happened and the catalogue of mistakes that were made. Why did the Allies attack a gun battery they knew held no artillery? Why was the nearby Maisy battery—armed and operational—ignored?
The author examines these questions in detail. Some of the technical descriptions of the guns and defences may appeal most to dedicated military historians, but the new evidence is compelling. Sterne himself has purchased part of the Maisy site and opened it to the public as an addition to the Normandy D-Day tour.
Packed with photographs that quite literally put you on the ground, this book rewrites a critical chapter of D-Day history.
